Vervain is considered undemanding. Nevertheless, the seeds should not simply be scattered in the garden or in the balcony box in passing and left to their own devices. Then you can probably hope for success for a long time and wait
When and how should you sow verbena?
Vervain should be sown outdoors from the end of April to mid-June. For pre-cultivation at home, you can start on the windowsill from February to April. Make sure you choose a sunny location and a well-drained, moderately nutrient-rich soil for optimal growth.

Pre-culture: From seed to seedling
Once you have gotten the seeds, follow these steps:
- Fill the seed tray with nutrient-poor substrate
- Press seeds into the soil and cover a maximum of 5 mm with soil (light germinator)
- moisten vigorously with water from a plant spray bottle
- place in a warm place (temperature of 20 °C)
- keep it moist over the next few weeks
- The seedlings appear after 12 to 20 days
In the open field, you should ensure a distance of 25 to 30 cm between the individual verbena plants when sowing or transplanting. If verbena is to grow in a pot, it should be deep enough as the plant develops long roots.
Afterwards: Choosing the right location
After the Ice Saints in May, the verbena can be planted out or moved to the balcony. The choice should be placed on a sunny location. Alternatively, a partially shaded location can be chosen. But be careful: the sunnier, the larger and more flowering the verbena becomes. In general, the site should be in a location protected from wind.
In order to keep the subsequent maintenance effort to a minimum, it is recommended to pay attention to the substrate. The soil should be well-drained so that no waterlogging can form. A lean to moderately nutrient-rich and humus-rich substrate with a dry to moist environment is also advantageous.
Tips & Tricks
As soon as the verbena plants have reached a height of 8 cm, you should deadhead them. As a result, they branch better.
