The lavender is an extremely sun-drenched plant that comes from the milder coastal regions of the Mediterranean. This type of lavender therefore does not tolerate frost at all, so appropriate winter quarters are required.

How do I overwinter crested lavender correctly?

To overwinter lavender successfully, place the plant in a frost-free, cool (5-10 degrees Celsius) and bright location, such as a garden shed or attic. Water carefully without allowing the soil to dry out to avoid root rot.

Flower lavender needs a bright and cool place

However, you should not overwinter the plants in the heated living room, because lavender needs a location that is between five to ten degrees Celsius cool - but frost-free - in the cold season. It should also be as bright as possible, so a dark basement or similar is not very suitable. It is better to overwinter the plants in an attic, in a garden shed, in an unheated bedroom or in a (non-drafty) stairwell. In addition, the lavender also needs water in winter, but you should proceed with caution. Water the plant just enough to keep the soil from drying out. Soil that is too moist, especially in winter, often leads to root rot and the lavender dies.

Tips & Tricks

From March / April you can put the lavender outside again for an hour on warm days. However, slowly acclimate the plant to the sun and bring it back in at night.
