The lavender is a sun and warmth-requiring plant that should be kept cool but frost-free in winter. As a rule, the shrub can tolerate temperatures around freezing point for a short time - provided it is appropriately protected.
How do I overwinter lavender in a pot?
To overwinter lavender in a pot, place it in a protected, sunny location, cover the substrate with brushwood and wrap the pot with protective mats. In winter, place it in a cool and bright place as soon as the temperatures drop permanently below freezing.
Wrap the pot with protective mats
As long as the temperatures do not fall permanently below freezing, you can also place a pot of lavender in a protected place - i.e. H. not draughty and not windy - leave it in a corner in the garden or on the balcony. The plant prefers a spot on a warm house wall that is preferably south-facing. Lavender needs a lot of sun, even in winter. As long as the pot is outside, you should cover the substrate with brushwood and wrap the container with protective mats (€21.00 on Amazon), for example made of coconut. In this way you protect the roots from freezing. As soon as it gets colder, the lavender belongs in a cool and bright place within the house or in a greenhouse.
Tips & Tricks
When the temperatures rise again in February / March, you can put the pot outside again for a few hours when the temperatures are warm and get the plant used to the sun - this way it can prepare for an early start to flowering from May.
