Coriander is an annual plant that comes from the Mediterranean regions. The spice plant cannot survive frosty temperatures. In addition, the summer flowering heralds the end of the short plant life by investing all energy into the growth of the seeds.
How to overwinter coriander in winter?
Coriander cannot be left outside in winter, but Vietnamese coriander can overwinter in a sheltered space, such as a room or conservatory, at 18-22 degrees Celsius. The plant should be kept slightly moist and liquid fertilized every 6-8 weeks. Alternatively, cooler storage at 5-10 degrees Celsius in the cellar is also possible.
An exception is Vietnamese coriander. The tropical knotweed plant is not related to coriander and has the potential for perennial cultivation. Overwintering in the protected ambience of a room or winter garden can be achieved like this:
- give the plant away from temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius
- overwinter on the sunny, warm windowsill at 18 to 22 degrees Celsius
- keep it slightly moist and fertilize liquid every 6-8 weeks
- optionally store in a cool, dark cellar at 5 to 10 degrees Celsius
- water little and do not fertilize
If you would like to continue harvesting the aromatic leaves during the cold season, a warm location should be considered. However, a cool winter break is more advantageous so that the herb plant can gather fresh strength.
