Marjoram doesn't need much care. However, it may make sense to trim the plant occasionally. Then it grows bushier. Particularly with wild marjoram, oregano, it is advisable to prune vigorously if the plants become too overgrown.

How and when do you cut marjoram correctly?

To properly cut marjoram, use sharp scissors and cut only the top third of the stems. This encourages bushy growth and extends the harvest season. The best time for cutting is from July and shortly before flowering for particularly spicy herbs.

How to cut marjoram correctly

You can of course cut marjoram with a sharp knife. However, it works better with sharp scissors. This will help you get clean cuts and prevent the stems from fraying.

Harvest the desired amount of marjoram by cutting off only about a third of the stem. Many small branches form under the cut, making the plant bushier.

This will also extend the harvest time because you can cut fresh marjoram three times from each stalk.

The best time to cut marjoram and oregano

  • Cut from July
  • Also cut during flowering and afterwards
  • Prune occasionally
  • Remove only upper third

Marjoram can be cut all year round as soon as the stems are long enough. The herb is also edible during and after flowering. However, it is no longer quite as aromatic after flowering.

If you want to harvest particularly spicy herbs, you should cut the marjoram just before it starts to bloom.

Oregano contains more essential oils during flowering than before and after. It is much more aromatic at this time.

Growing bushy marjoram plants

If the marjoram plant grows very thin, you should use scissors.

Cut a few stems low down. In these places the marjoram sprouts again and the plant takes on a more compact appearance.

Cutting oregano plants

Unlike marjoram, oregano occasionally needs vigorous pruning because the plants tend to spread uncontrollably.

Cut it back to a hand's width above the ground. You will then get strong plants that produce lots of stems and flowers.

Before winter, you should cut back oregano outdoors and, to be on the safe side, provide it with light winter protection.

Tips & Tricks

If you have harvested a lot of marjoram when pruning, preserve it by drying it. The herb is not particularly suitable for freezing as it loses too much flavor.
