When cutting Reneklode, the planting cut should be done after planting, followed by the training cut (for 6 years) and finally the maintenance cut. It is important to have sharp, clean tools and frost-free days for cutting to prevent diseases.

The benefits of regular trimming

Regardless of the variety, the Reneclode should be cut regularly. Cutting keeps the plant he althy, increases the chance of many, well-ripening fruits and prevents the plant from aging prematurely.

At the beginning: The plant cut

After planting the Reneclude, a so-called planting cut should be carried out in the following spring. The aim is to create guiding branches around the trunk. It is crucial for a good basic structure.

To do this, the side shoots that point steeply upwards are cut away. Side shoots that are at a good angle such as a 45° angle should be left. In total, no more than five side shoots should extend from the main shoot. Furthermore, when planting, the favorable side shoots are shortened by a third.

For 6 years: parenting transition

The reindeer needs an average of six years to finish building its crown. The training cut is carried out every year and is best done between November and February. The goal is to provide each leading branch with up to 8 side branches. Shoots that fall out of the grid or become disruptive are shortened to 10 cm. Water bullets are also removed.

Once the crown has built up, maintenance pruning is carried out every year. The aim here is to keep the crown light. This means the fruits can ripen better. Thinning also prevents excessive fruit cover from causing branches to break.
