The persimmon tree can grow up to 10 meters high. Since it is often kept in pots in this country due to its sensitivity to frost, it should be cut back regularly just for better handling.

When and how should you prune a persimmon tree?

The persimmon tree should be pruned either in fall or at the end of winter/early spring. Training pruning, fruit wood pruning and rejuvenation pruning can be used. Branches that are damaged, dry or bothersome should be removed. The cut should be done in frost-free weather.

The persimmon tree (bot. Diospyros kaki) is a deciduous, flowering tree with lanceolate leaves and round, apple-like fruits that form from the flowers even without pollination. The persimmon tree comes from Asia and has been cultivated there for over 2000 years. It is robust, easy to care for and not susceptible to diseases and pests.

Since Diospyros kaki is not hardy, the tree often only survives in regions of Germany that are not wine-growing regions if it is kept frost-free and dark after the leaves have been shed.

Appropriate cutting measures

The persimmon tree is similar in growth to the domestic apple tree and can grow up to 10 meters high. When kept in a container, it is therefore advisable to limit its growth. For this purpose, training pruning can be used in the first 2-3 years, in which main and side shoots are shortened and directed in the desired direction. In terms of shape, depending on the variety, the persimmon tree can be called

  • High trunk,
  • Half trunk,
  • shrub or
  • on the trellis

be educated. If necessary, other pruning measures such as fruit wood pruning and rejuvenation pruning can also be carried out. To thin out the crown of older trees, the damaged, dry and annoying branches are removed.

Cutting time

The persimmon plants tolerate both autumn and spring pruning well. At the end of winter or in early spring, pruning is carried out before the leaves emerge. The persimmon plants are cut in autumn before they are moved to their wintering location. It is sufficient to thin out the crown and remove branches that hang too low.

Tips & Tricks

All pruning measures to be carried out should preferably be carried out in frost-free weather.
