Most Canna species are not hardy. Just a few degrees below 0 can mean the end. They are particularly sensitive to cool, wet conditions. That's why it's called: hibernate!
How can I overwinter canna plants properly?
To overwinter Canna successfully, cut the plant back about 5 cm above the ground in autumn, dig up the tuber and brush off the soil. Then store the tubers in a dark and cool place, for example in a sandbox or a pot with soil.
Winter outdoors or at home?
Overwintering the plant outside is less recommended. It is better to dig up the tubers and bring them over the winter undamaged at home, for example in the winter garden, in the basement, in the garage or in the attic.
How to prepare canna for overwintering?
As soon as the first frost approaches in October and the leaves of Canna have yellowed or turned brown, you should radically cut the flower back to 5 cm above the ground. This is how it continues:
- Dig up tuber
- brush off remaining soil
- Let the tuber dry for a few days
Where can Canna be overwintered?
The tuber of the flower cane can be best overwintered in dark and cool places. The place should be dry. For example, a box with sand or a pot with soil are well suited.
What needs to be taken into account when wintering?
There are mistakes that are not uncommon when wintering. Please note the following:
- in the open field: provide a 20 cm thick layer of mulch and ensure good drainage
- never water or fertilize
- choose frost-free wintering quarters
- not warmer than 15 °C
- Protect tuber from drying out (spray soil with water if necessary)
- Planting out mid-May at the earliest
Tips & Tricks
Attention: Do not cut the plant back too early! The tuber draws nutrients from the leaves before the above-ground parts of the plant die (turn yellow or brown).
