The bell vine is very warm-loving and sensitive to frost. Even temperatures of five degrees cause such lasting damage to the plant that it subsequently dies. That's why in our latitudes the bellweed is mainly cultivated as an annual. However, you can overwinter particularly beautiful and vigorously growing specimens indoors.
How to overwinter a bell vine?
To overwinter a bell vine successfully, shorten the shoots to 30-50 cm, plant in a container with potting soil and place in a bright, cool place. Water sparingly, do not fertilize and check for spider mite infestation.
Get warm in time
To prevent frost damage, the climbing plants must be moved when the temperatures begin to fall in autumn. Shorten all shoots to around thirty to fifty centimeters and plant the morning glory in a container filled with standard potting soil (€10.00 on Amazon).
Place this in a bright place on the windowsill. Here too, the temperature should not fall below ten degrees. A cool bedroom or the stairwell is ideal. During winter rest, the bell vine is watered cautiously and not fertilized.
Tip
Bell morning glories are very susceptible to spider mite infestation. Check plants in their winter quarters regularly and take appropriate measures to combat pests if necessary.
