Mowing the lawn regularly is probably one of the jobs that hardly anyone likes to do. However, you can make your work a lot easier if you separate the lawn from beds and paths with a lawn mowing edge.
How can I make the edge of the lawn easier when mowing?
In order to mow the lawn edge effectively, lawn edging stones or mowing edges made of various materials can be used, which are laid at ground level. This means you can simply drive over the edge when mowing the lawn without damaging the blades or pulling grass out of beds and paths.
Laying the lawn mowing edge
Redge the lawn with one or more rows of lawn edging stones. This not only saves you having to mow the lawn. At the same time, they prevent the lawn from spreading onto beds and paths.
To do this, lay a mowing edge:
- Stones
- Aluminium
- Iron
- Wood
- Plastic
At the gardening store you can get advice on which materials for lawn edging are particularly suitable for your purposes. If you want something cheaper, you can also use old roof tiles or leftover paving stones.
The mowing edge makes lawn care much easier because you don't have to constantly pull grass out of the beds and paths. At the same time, it provides a decorative eye-catcher in the garden and makes it generally look better.
Laying lawn edge stones at ground level
If you want to save yourself having to trim the lawn edges by hand, you should place the lawn edge stones so that the upper edge extends no more than one to two centimeters above the grass surface.
It is even better if the edge of the lawn is at ground level, as you can then simply cut the lawn edge stones with the mower when mowing the lawn without damaging the mower's blades or other plants.
Without lawn edging stones, mow the lawn regularly
The grass plants have a bad habit of spreading all over the garden. This is the case, for example, with the so-called English lawn edge, where lawn and beds or paths merge seamlessly into one another.
If the lawn is not bordered by a lawn edge made of lawn edging stones, you must grab a spade and cut the lawn at least every eight weeks.
You then have to rake up the lawn waste and either compost it or dispose of it with organic waste. With a lawn mowing edge you can save yourself this work and still have a very neat looking lawn edge.
Tips & Tricks
Even if the lawn edge is slightly higher than the lawn surface, it can still be worked on with the lawn mower. To do this, simply ride a bike along the edge. This means that the blades do not come into contact with the lawn mowing edge.
