A dense, green lawn that extends evenly across the garden is one of the standards in German gardens. To get a truly flat surface without dips and hills, you need to level the ground before sowing.
How can you level your lawn correctly?
To properly level the lawn, first loosen the soil, remove weeds and root residue. Fill depressions with topsoil and smooth out elevations. Use a leveling roller to compact the surface and roughen the soil lightly with a rake before seeding.
Why does the ground need to be leveled?
- Earth surface is pressed
- Dips and hills can be leveled out
- Ensures a level lawn
The best soil preparation before laying a new lawn or turf is to loosen the soil and remove all weeds, especially root weeds.
The area is then leveled with a leveling roller. This will ensure that the soil is well pressed. It will then no longer sink as much later and can be sown earlier.
Leveling eliminates all irregularities such as depressions and bumps in the ground. Otherwise, rainwater will build up in the depressions. This can cause the grass roots to rot.
How to bulldoze properly
The right time for leveling work is a rain-free day when the ground is as dry as possible.
First, the future lawn is roughened with a rake. In doing so, you remove root residues, larger stones and thickened soil.
Recognizable depressions should now be filled with topsoil or garden soil and small elevations should be removed. Only then will the surface be truly flat.
Use of the leveling roller
Once the preparatory work has been completed, walk over the ground with the leveling roller. This will compact the surface and prevent it from sinking heavily later when the earth settles.
Work in shoes without heels and tread lightly as possible to avoid leaving footprints on the surface. Of course, this cannot be completely avoided.
After leveling, examine the surface to see whether it has become completely flat and repair it if necessary.
Roughen the soil a little before sowing
Due to the leveling work, the surface is very solid. It is therefore lightly roughened with a rake before sowing.
Tips & Tricks
The leveling rollers that you can rent from the hardware store are hollow inside. This makes them easier to transport. Before grading, you must fill the roller with water so that the device can exert enough pressure on the ground.
