Probably the most unpleasant part of lawn care is trimming the edges of the lawn. However, this is necessary so that the lawn does not spread too much. With matching lawn edging you not only make your work easier - you also create very decorative lawns.
How to design a lawn edge?
Lawn edges can be designed with double rows of stone lawn edges, rustic wooden palisades or simple aluminum profiles. Stones offer durability, wood adds a rustic charm and aluminum profiles are a cost-effective option. Each variant helps to limit the spread of the lawn and makes maintenance easier.

Designing lawn edges with stones
Stone is indestructible. It may be time-consuming to lay a stone lawn edge, but it's worth the effort because you won't have to work with it afterwards.
There is a large selection of suitable types of stone. Dark granite, red brick, light clinker bricks or multi-colored natural stones – you can use all types to create decorative accents in the garden.
Lawn edge stones should always be placed in two rows. By staggering the stones, you prevent the grass from finding its way through the joints. Make sure that the stones are as flush as possible with the lawn. This makes the lawn easier to mow and saves you having to trim it by hand.
The rustic idea for lawn edges
Wood is a popular building material for rustic gardens. The wood care is a bit more time-consuming, but the sight of the finished lawn edge more than makes up for this.
Use pressure-treated wood and place the palisades deep enough in the soil to prevent grass roots from spreading underneath. To prevent the roots from slipping through the joints, you can also work plastic film invisibly into the soil.
Alu profiles – the inexpensive alternative
Aluminium profiles as lawn edges are easy to care for and have a long service life. The thin sections can be easily driven into the ground and are guaranteed to prevent the lawn from spreading. However, these lawn edges do not appear particularly decorative. They are therefore brought as deep into the earth as possible so that they can no longer be seen. This also applies to lawn edges made of plastic or rubber. These are not as robust as aluminum and can break easily, especially in frost.
Tips & Tricks
If you love natural gardens and therefore prefer English lawn edging, you have to mow the lawn regularly. This can be done with a spade. There are also special lawn edgers (€22.00 on Amazon) that make it easy to maintain the edges.
