Even an easy-care plant like the spider plant cannot survive without care. Regular but not too abundant watering, a bright, moderately warm location and occasional repotting – your spider plant needs much more to thrive.
How should you repot a spider plant correctly?
To repot a spider plant successfully, you should place it in a larger pot with fresh potting soil once a year. For very lush plants, it can be carefully divided and planted in separate pots. Shards of pottery in the pot help to avoid waterlogging.
How often does a spider plant need to be repotted?
It is completely sufficient if you repot your spider plant once a year. You don't necessarily have to note this date in your calendar. Water your spider plant well and give it a small amount of liquid fertilizer regularly and it will grow quite luxuriantly. If the fleshy roots stick out of the soil, then it's time to repot.
The correct procedure when repotting
Before repotting, get a flower pot with a larger diameter than the one you used previously. A spider plant continues to grow practically uninterrupted as long as temperatures do not fall below around 11 °C. Of course, the roots also grow and they require plenty of space. If your spider plant is very large so that a larger pot would be impractical, you can easily divide the plant.
Place a few shards of pottery in the flower pot so that the roots of your spider plant are not constantly in water if you water more abundantly. Place the plant in the pot and add fresh potting soil. Press the soil down a little and, as an exception, water the plant a little more than usual so that the soil is well flushed to the roots.
Dividing a spider plant
The best way to divide a spider plant is with your bare hands. Remove the old soil from the plant and untangle the roots as much as possible. Then break the plant apart carefully so as not to cause unnecessary damage to the roots. Now plant each part in a flower pot.
