Although there are over 100 different varieties of spider plants, only a few species have conquered our living rooms. This plant is not very demanding, but is extremely decorative with its lush foliage. It's not for nothing that they call it official grass.
Which spider plant species fit in the living room?
Some of the most well-known spider plant species are Chlorophytum comosum (most common), Chlorophytum comosum “Mandaianum” (small, dark green leaves with yellow stripe), Chlorophytum capense (with white central stripe) and Chlorophytum amaniense (with bronze leaves). They can all be cared for in the living room.
The spider plant can be seen quite often in offices. Since it doesn't require a lot of water, it can survive the weekend or holidays without anyone having to come over to water it. Nevertheless, this plant is not boring, there are different color variations.
Which types of spider plants are suitable for the living room?
The spider plant, which comes from South Africa, has been used as a houseplant in Europe since around the end of the 19th century. In principle, all types are suitable for this. Make sure that the plant has enough space, as the long, narrow leaves look best when hanging. If they hit a surface, the tips may turn brown.
The offshoots form on hanging shoots; depending on the species, they can be up to 70 cm long. This gives your spider plant a lush and exotic look. The plant looks particularly beautiful in a decorative hanging basket (€13.00 on Amazon). If you leave all the offshoots on the plant, it will of course need more water and possibly some fertilizer.
The different types of spider plants
The wild form of the spider plant has simply green leaves. The species “Chlorophytum comosum” is considered to be the most common species. The variety “Manaianu” has particularly small leaves with a length of 10 to 15 cm. They are dark green and have a yellow central stripe. This means they are also suitable for smaller rooms. The variety Chlorophytum amaniense is also very decorative with its bronze-colored leaves.

Tips & Tricks
If you leave the offshoots on the mother plant, it will appear particularly lush, but it also requires more nutrients. Take a few cuttings in time to grow plants to give as gifts.
