Calla (Zantedeschia) is no longer just a mourning flower. Thanks to the breeding of colored varieties, the pretty flower is also very popular in wedding bouquets or as an elegant flower souvenir. How to properly care for calla lilies as cut flowers.
How do you properly care for calla lilies as a cut flower?
Answer: To optimally care for calla flowers as cut flowers, cut them early in the morning, clean the vase thoroughly and fill up with fresh water with fresh flowers. Make sure there is enough light, avoid heat, direct drafts and fruit peels near the calla vase and change the water regularly.
Calla – the durable cut flower
With proper care, calla flowers last up to three weeks in the vase. In order for the calla lily to last as long as it does, you need to pay attention to a few points:
- Time to cut
- Straight cut
- Clean water
- Freshflowers
- Convenient location
Cut and cut calla lilies correctly
If you want to cut calla flowers from your houseplant, water the plant generously the evening before. The flowers then draw enough water.
The next morning, cut the stems as far down as possible with a sharp knife. The cut must be straight. Prevent the stem from rolling up by sticking a strip of scotch tape (€5.00 on Amazon) over the cut point around the stem.
You should always unpack purchased calla lilies or gift bouquets immediately. Re-cut the stems before placing the flowers in the water.
Clean the vase beforehand
The vase must be carefully cleaned before filling with water. This will remove any putrefactive bacteria that may be present.
Rinse the vase well. Residual cleaning agents shorten the lifespan of the calla.
The right location for the vase
If you want to have something from your bouquet for a long time, do not place it too warm or too dark. The location near the heater or next to the computer is very unfavorable because of the heat generated.
Make sure that the flowers are not exposed to a draft.
Caring for calla lilies as cut flowers
Make sure that the water level in the vase does not sink too low. With some cut flowers you have to refill some water several times a day.
Replace the entire flower water every two days at the latest.
Every time, add some fresh flowers to the water to provide the flowers with nutrients. Blumenfrisch also eliminates putrefactive bacteria.
Tips & Tricks
Avoid placing a vase of calla flowers right next to fruit bowls. Ripe fruit gives off gases that promote the decay of the Zantedeschia.
