A pot of daffodil bulbs was bought from the discount store around the corner. The daffodils should bloom soon. But what happens to them after they bloom? Are they perennial and are they worth keeping or should they be thrown away later?
Are daffodils perennial plants?
Daffodils are basically perennial plants because they have a bulb as a survival organ. To maintain their perennial nature, they should be planted deep enough, not cut too early after flowering and fertilized regularly.
Are daffodils always perennial?
Basically, all types of daffodils are perennial. They have a bulb as a survival organ. The onion can cope with low temperatures without any problems because it finds protection underground. But there are reasons why some daffodils don't sprout a second time
Reasons why many daffodils are not perennial
Here are the most common reasons why some people never see the daffodil they have planted a second time:
- Onion was not planted deep enough
- Leaves were cut off too early after flowering
- Onion has dried out
- other plants have replaced the daffodil

Suitable location for these perennial early bloomers
You should plant daffodils where there are no competitors. They need a sunny to partially shaded location. The soil should be loamy, nutrient-rich and moist. Planting daffodils next to tulips is not recommended. Tulips do not like the moist environment in the soil that daffodils love.
Caring for these perennial bulb flowers
Daffodils don't like lime-containing tap water, but prefer lime-free rainwater. They will withdraw from June at the latest. But the soil around the onion should not dry out even during the summer. Therefore, it is not a mistake to spread a layer of mulch over the daffodils.
Nutrients are still crucial for a long-term existence. The onion has to absorb nutrients every year in order to have the strength to sprout in the spring. Therefore, daffodils in pots need to be fertilized regularly. Daffodils outdoors can be provided with compost.
Many daffodils in one place rob each other of nutrients. For this reason, it is advisable to dig up the daffodils every 3 to 4 years and separate the newly formed bulbs from each other. They can be discarded or planted elsewhere.

Daffodils in pots should not be left outside during the winter. It is best to dig up the onions and store them indoors or put the pot and the onions in the cellar.
