Due to its striking flowers, the iris, also known as the iris, is one of the oldest cultivated ornamental plants in this country. Due to frequent planting and propagation in private gardens, there are now a variety of flower shapes and colors.
What does the iris flower look like and when does it bloom?
The iris flower, also known as the iris, consists of three individual insect-pollinated “flowers” with characteristic drooping beards or combs, upright standards and stigmatic branches. The flowering period varies between April and June depending on the size.
The characteristic shape of the iris flower
The name iris comes from the pointed leaves and the characteristically shaped flowers. Botanically, each iris flower consists of three “flowers” that can be individually pollinated by insects, each consisting of the following components:
- Hanging leaves with noticeable beards or combs
- Cathedral leaves that often stand upright
- Scar Branches
If you do not cut off the flowers directly after the flowering period, then the seeds will develop in the capsule fruits, which, as loculicidal capsules, tear open at the dorsal seams of the carpel when ripe.
Tips & Tricks
The time of flowering for many iris species depends on the size: smaller bearded irises can bloom as early as April, while an iris over 100 centimeters high usually only begins to bloom in June.
