Even though the African violets are in a perfect location in the apartment, a lot can still go wrong. These plants from Tanzania will quickly become ill or not bloom if watering is done incorrectly.
How should you water African violets?
To water African violets properly, use room temperature (20 °C), low-lime water, water abundantly, avoid waterlogging and keep the soil slightly moist. Wait until the top layer of soil has dried before watering again and add liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks. Do not water the leaves.
The most common mistakes
The water you use to water your African violets should be at room temperature. Water that is too cold will shock these plants and make them susceptible to disease. Ideally it is 20 °C.
Tap water is not suitable for watering African violets. Low-lime to lime-free water such as rainwater, stale tap water or water that has been freed from limescale using a water filter is more suitable for caring for these plants.
Here are more tips:
- water abundantly
- Avoid waterlogging
- Keep soil slightly moist
- only water when the top layer of soil has dried out
- Add liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water every 2 weeks
- don't water the leaves
Tips & Tricks
In a room with high humidity such as the bathroom, African violets require less watering.
