The honeysuckle – this creeper has it all. This climbing plant quickly conquers objects in its vicinity. With its dense foliage and delicate flowers, it acts as a valuable privacy screen and can also cover dreary masonry underneath. But how is honeysuckle planted correctly?
How do I plant honeysuckle correctly?
The honeysuckle should be planted in early spring in a partially shaded, wind-protected location. Make sure the soil is moist, air-permeable, humus-rich, low-lime and nutrient-rich. Plant the honeysuckle in a hole twice as wide and deep as the root ball, add compost and sand, and cover with soil. If necessary, provide a plant support.
When should you plant honeysuckle?
Honeysuckle can be planted as long as the ground is frost-free. It is well winter hardy. It should preferably be planted outside of its flowering period as this robs it of its strength. The ideal planting time is early spring.
Which location is suitable for honeysuckle?
Whether on walls, fences, house facades or trees or as a ground cover - honeysuckle feels most comfortable in a bright and moderately warm location. You should choose a partially shaded spot. It would be optimal if the humidity there was high and the location was protected from the wind.
Too much sun can dry out honeysuckle and make it more susceptible to pests. A shady location can also be an option if necessary. But remember: the honeysuckle grows more bare there due to the lack of light. This makes it harder for it to cover walls etc.
Does honeysuckle place special demands on the soil?
In general, honeysuckle is undemanding. The top priority when it comes to soil is constant moisture. The soil should never dry out, but should be kept fresh to moderately moist. Waterlogging should not occur as it will soon cause root rot. Less crucial properties of the soil are:
- good air permeability
- easy
- humus-rich
- calcareous
- nutrient-rich
