Spring bloomers sprout early. That's why the onions are planted in autumn. They wait in the pot, ready to awaken with the first rays of sunshine. But as long as the frost is still outside, they have to hibernate safely.
How can I overwinter flower bulbs in a pot?
To successfully overwinter flower bulbs in pots, store them at 0-8°C in a frost-free room such as the basement, water them every 2 weeks and keep the soil moist. Alternatively, protect them outside with a layer of sand, Styrofoam or fleece and pay attention to soil moisture.
Temperature fluctuations are unfavorable
Flower bulbs that sprout in early spring are hardy. But while they survive the necessary cold stimulus unscathed in the garden soil, they are exposed to temperature fluctuations in pots. These can have negative consequences:
- the earth freezes faster and so do the onions
- Sun rays warm the earth and lead to premature sprouting
For these reasons, flower bulbs in pots should, if possible, not be allowed to overwinter outside or at least receive the best possible protection.
Wintering quarters
If you have appropriate space, you should keep the planted pots frost-free.
- Put onions in pot
- Then store the pot at 0 to 8 degrees Celsius
- z. B. in a basement room
- Soil should be consistently moistened
- water every 2 weeks as needed
Tip
Since this overwintering method allows you to plant until late November, you may be able to get cheap remaining stock at the garden center.
Winter outside
If you don't have the opportunity to bring pots and balcony boxes inside, you can also overwinter the flower bulbs outside. This is not possible without appropriate protective measures:
- the bulbs need to grow roots
- therefore plant by mid-October at the latest
- Cover soil with a layer of sand
- place protected
- Protect pots with Styrofoam (€7.00 on Amazon) or wrap with fleece
- make sure the soil moisture is consistent
