Fertilizing is considered an important part of cyclamen care. A lack of nutrients can have a detrimental effect on growth vigor, flowering endurance and resistance to diseases and pests. Therefore: Proper fertilization needs to be learned!
How should you properly fertilize cyclamen?
Cyclamens should be fertilized during their flowering period from July/August to March, in the bed every 2 to 3 months, in the pot every 2 to 4 weeks. There is a fertilizer break in summer. Use liquid fertilizer for potted plants and compost or organic fertilizer for garden plants.
Fertilize shortly before and during flowering
Unlike most other perennials, cyclamen are fertilized from July/August and until March. This is the period of their flowering when they need a lot of nutrients. Otherwise the flowers won't last long.
If these perennials are in pots, they receive fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks (every 8 weeks at the latest). If they are outside in the bed, it is sufficient to fertilize them every 2 to 3 months. The general rule is: fertilization can be carried out as soon as new leaves and flowers are visible.
Summertime is a time of rest and closure
The cyclamen has its rest period in summer. Then ideally it should not be fertilized. The fertilizer would probably harm him. However, if you insist on beautiful leaves that do not yellow, you can fertilize your cyclamen sparingly, even in summer.
Usually the rest period lasts at least 8 weeks. It starts in April/May and ends in June. After the rest period, the frequency of watering increases and fertilization is also slowly increased again.
Which fertilizer is suitable?
For cyclamens in pots, a conventional liquid fertilizer (€8.00 on Amazon) is a good choice. But fertilizer in stick form is also suitable. It is advisable to apply the fertilizer in a weak concentration and mix the liquid fertilizer into the irrigation water. On the other hand, cyclamens in the garden should be provided with compost or another organic complete fertilizer.
Benefits of proper fertilization
If you fertilize your cyclamen correctly, you will achieve several advantages:
- ensures abundant blooms
- ensures a long lasting flowering period
- reduces the risk of disease and pest infestation
- will enjoy the plant for many years
Tips & Tricks
Cyclamens that are outside in the garden can be given a generous layer of compost in the fall. On the one hand, the compost fertilizes and on the other hand it protects the plant from severe frost in winter.
