As diverse as the types of indoor palms are, their appearance and flowering times are just as different. There are palm trees that only bloom when they are old, like the honey palm, which also grows very slowly.
When does an indoor palm bloom and which species are particularly attractive?
Indoor palms bloom very differently depending on the species: the Chilean honey palm takes around 60 years to bloom for the first time, cycad flowers more quickly, but is poisonous. The Yucca rostrata is easy to care for and forms tall inflorescences with white, cream or yellowish flowers.
When the first flowers appear, the Chilean honey palm is around 60 years old. You definitely won't want to wait that long. So if you value flowers, you should choose a different type of palm tree. In contrast to real ferns, cycads reproduce through flowers, not through spores. However, it requires a lot of care and unfortunately is also poisonous.
Can I propagate my palm tree through flowers or seeds?
If you would like to grow indoor palms from seeds, then it is better to buy them from specialist retailers (€2.00 on Amazon) than to wait for your own palm tree to bloom. Not only do some species bloom very late, some species only form viable seeds if you have male and female plants. You should only embark on this adventure if you know exactly which palm tree you own and how to propagate it.
Very decorative: the flower of the Yucca rostrata
Yucca rostrata, which comes from Texas and northern Mexico, is very hardy. This makes it an interesting palm not only for the living room but also for the garden. Their inflorescences grow above the leaves and can reach a height of around one to two meters. The mostly white or cream-colored flowers hang down in a bell shape. Since this yucca is quite easy to care for, it is also suitable for beginners.
The most important things in brief:
- Age at first flowering varies greatly depending on species
- Chilean honey palm only blooms when it is around 60 years old
- Fire palm: yellow short inflorescences, later red berries
- Cycedony blooms, but is poisonous
- Yucca rostrata: tall inflorescences with white, cream or yellowish flowers
Tip
Indoor palms impress less with their flowers than with their unusual and exotic appearance. Therefore, flower formation and color should not actually be a purchasing criterion for these plants.
