Anyone who believes that sunflowers always only have one large, golden-yellow flower has not yet heard of the “Evening Sun” variety. This cultivar produces beautiful flowers whose colors range from orange to deep red. They are often even multicolored.

What characterizes the sunflower evening sun?

The “Evening Sun” sunflower is a special variety that bears several multi-colored flowers in orange and deep red on each stem. It has a long flowering period, grows up to 2.50 meters high and is undemanding and easy to care for.

Several multi-colored flowers on one plant

Several flowers grow on each stem of the “Evening Sun” sunflower. They don't grow quite as big as the well-known giant sunflowers.

But they shine in the red-gold colors of a sunset. This sunflower variety lives up to its variety name with its flower colors.

The flowers, which bloom in two colors, are particularly decorative. They often have a yellow wreath inside and out, while the central wreath is red or orange.

Decorative privacy protection thanks to a long flowering period

“Evening Sun” has a very long flowering period. The first flowers appear in summer. New flowers continue to appear until frost begins.

The variety grows up to two meters high, sometimes individual plants even reach 2.50 meters. “Evening sun” is therefore an ideal privacy screen on fences and terrace borders.

Undemanding and easy to care for

Like all sunflower species, the “evening sun” is quite undemanding when it comes to location.

It likes it sunny, but actually grows anywhere there is space. However, in the shade it remains rather small. In drafty areas there is a risk that the stems will break.

When planting in the garden, you should maintain a planting distance of around 70 centimeters.

Care for “evening sun”

  • Water daily
  • Watere twice a day in hot weather
  • Fertilize every two weeks
  • Tie to support posts

The care of “Evening Sun” is no different from that of other sunflower varieties.

Water abundantly and fertilize regularly, as the “Evening Sun” cultivar, like all sunflowers, needs a lot of nutrients to reach its stately size.

Buy “Evening Sun” or harvest it yourself

The “Abendsonne” cultivar is available in every well-stocked gardening store as a seed bag (€2.00 on Amazon).

You can harvest new seeds for sowing next year from the dead flowers.

Of course, you can simply leave the dead flowers standing to provide the birds with a source of food in winter.

Tips & Tricks

The “Evening Sun” sunflower is very suitable as a cut flower. It will last a long time if you cut it on the driest possible day. Dip the stems in boiling water for a few seconds and do not place the vase too sunny.
