How do I successfully care for a sunflower in a pot?

To successfully plant sunflowers in pots, choose a deep pot with at least 30 cm in diameter, sow several seeds per pot and place the pot in a sunny location. Make sure you water and fertilize regularly for optimal flower formation.

Growing sunflowers as solitary plants

Sunflowers are heavy feeders whose roots dig deep into the earth. The plants cannot spread as well in pots or containers. They therefore remain much smaller than sunflowers that you plant in the garden.

Only one sunflower should grow per pot so that the plants do not rob each other of space and nutrients.

However, you should always sow several seeds at once, as not all seeds will germinate. If several seeds have sprouted, the weaker plants are cut off.

The right pot

The larger and, above all, deeper the pot, the bigger the sunflowers will grow. Balcony boxes are only suitable for growing sunflowers. Later the plants must be transplanted into individual pots or containers.

Pots with a diameter of 30 centimeters are ideal. Heavy buckets are more stable. They don't tip over as quickly when the sunflower is fully grown.

How to prepare the planters:

  • Clean pots well
  • Prick a drain hole if not available
  • Fill in nutritious potting soil
  • Place on coaster

Prefer sunflowers for the pot

To prefer sunflowers, you can use window boxes or small pots.

Fill it with potting soil and insert the seeds about two centimeters deep into the soil. Always sow three to five seeds in a pot or seed hole. Keep the soil moist.

As soon as the plants are large enough, they are separated.

Place sunflowers in pots as sunny as possible

Place the containers or pots as sunny as possible. South-facing balconies or terraces are ideal.

Water and fertilize the sunflowers frequently so that they can develop many flowers.

Tips & Tricks

Sunflowers intended for the garden can also be grown in pots. Early flowers have a big advantage over plants that are only sown outdoors at the end of April.
