A bouquet of sunflowers in a vase is a real eye-catcher in the room. Unfortunately the flowers last for a maximum of two weeks. What you can do to keep the beautiful flowers in the vase fresh longer.
How do you optimally care for sunflowers in a vase?
Sunflowers are not suitable as long-term houseplants. To extend their flowering time indoors, place them in a bright but not too sunny location, protect them from drafts and change the lukewarm water in their vase every day. New flower cuttings are recommended every two days.
When should you best cut the flowers?
If you want to cut cut flowers from your own sunflowers, choose a day that is as dry as possible.
Only cut flowers that are already half open. Fully opened flowers only last a very short time in the vase.
How do you prepare the sunflowers for the vase?
Cut the bottom of the sunflower stems two to three centimeters so that they can store enough oxygen.
Dip the ends in boiling water for a maximum of five seconds. Under no circumstances should you leave the stems in the water for longer.
Heating destroys the stems. This prevents the flower from rotting too early.
How can you keep cut flowers fresh for a long time?
Place the cut sunflowers in a vase with lukewarm, never cold water.
- No blazing sun
- No drafts
- Change water daily
- Re-cut every two days
As cut flowers, sunflowers tolerate full sun very poorly. Therefore, place the vase in a place that is bright but not too sunny. Protect the bouquet from drafts.
What should you pay attention to when changing the water and cutting?
Make sure that the flower water is never completely cold. Warm water, on the other hand, does no harm.
Use a clean, sharp knife when cutting to avoid transferring germs and fraying the stems at the bottom. Frayed areas provide a good breeding ground for bacteria.
Does Blumenfrisch help sunflowers last longer?
Flower fresh is not necessary if you change the floral water every day. It simply prevents the proliferation of putrefactive bacteria in the water, so that there is no unpleasant smell coming from the vase. This has no influence on the durability of the flowers.
