Regardless of which variety of skimmie – they all originate in mountain forests. It's mostly shady there. But does this plant really like it or what demands does it have on the location?
Which location does the Skimmia plant prefer?
The ideal location for Skimmia is bright and partially shaded, for example under conifers or in the shade bed. You should avoid direct sun as the leaves will curl and turn yellow. The soil should be lime-free, acidic to neutral, well-drained, humus-rich and enriched with compost.
Bright, but no direct sun
Skimmia grows best in a bright and partially shaded place, for example under conifers or in a shade bed. In deep shade they produce fewer flowers and bright red fruits. In the direct sun their leaves curl up and turn yellow.
In order to keep subsequent care as low as possible, a well-suited soil should be chosen when planting. The following properties of the earth have a positive effect on skimmia:
- lime-free
- sour to neutral
- well drained
- humos
- enriched with compost
Tip
Since the skimmia has similar location requirements as rhododendrons, these two plants can easily be planted next to each other.
