Privet is very adaptable and can cope with almost any location. Nevertheless, you should choose a good place for the privet to grow quickly. What is the right location for privet?
Which location is best for privet?
The ideal location for privet is sunny to partially shaded, with well-drained soil. Shady locations should be avoided as the shrub grows more poorly there. Waterlogging is also unsuitable and winter-hardy varieties do not require any special protection.
Location for privet not in the shade
- Sunny
- partly shaded
- not shady
- water-permeable soil
Privet likes it bright. Direct shade is not necessarily suitable as the shrub does not grow well here and has few leaves.
It is important that the soil is well permeable to water, because privet cannot cope with waterlogging. If necessary, create drainage (€14.00 on Amazon) before planting.
Since most varieties of privet are hardy, the shrub does not need a particularly protected location. Only younger plants should not be exposed to strong winter sun in winter.
Tip
Privet can be cultivated as a hedge, as a single shrub or in a pot. Because it tolerates cutting well, it is also often kept as a bonsai.
