How should you plant false cypresses correctly?
When planting false cypresses, a sunny or partially shaded location is ideal. The soil should be loose, humus-rich and not waterlogged. The best planting time is autumn to early October, and the planting distance is 50 centimeters in a hedge or 30 centimeters if you want it to remain low.
Which location is ideal for false cypresses?
Cypresses like it sunny or at least partially shaded. In a location that is too dark and shady, the trees remain small and weak.
You can also grow low false cypresses in pots or as bonsai.
What should the soil be like?

Prepare the planting hole by working mature compost (€12.00 on Amazon) or horn shavings into the soil. Loosen very firm soils with sand. If the soil is moist, you should ensure drainage.
What planting distance should be maintained?
As a single plant, the false cypress should have three square meters available. When planting as a hedge, the ideal planting distance is 50 centimeters. If you want the hedge to remain very low, 30 centimeters is enough.
How far the false cypress must be from neighboring properties depends on the responsible municipality.
When planting near buildings, keep a distance of at least two meters.
When is the best time to plant?
Like all arborvitae, false cypresses are best planted in autumn until the beginning of October. You can plant container goods all year round if you water the plants regularly.
Can false cypress trees be transplanted?
Transplanting is possible up to the age of around four years. You should no longer move older false cypresses as it is almost impossible to dig up the entire root ball.
How are false cypresses propagated?
Propagation occurs by sowing or cuttings.
Which plants are suitable as neighbors?
If the false cypress stands alone, it looks best when it has plenty of space around it. In hedges it gets along with many other hedge plants such as thuja, snow jasmine or hornbeams.
Are false cypresses poisonous?
All parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and animals. They should therefore only be planted out of the reach of children, pets or grazing animals.
Tip
There are around ten different types of false cypresses commercially available. They differ primarily in the color of the needles. So you can plant blue cypresses or opt for light green or darker varieties.
