Beans are a delicious, vitamin-rich vegetable. But before enjoyment comes cultivation, which begins with sowing. The easiest way to sow beans is direct sowing in the garden. This is done every year because beans are annual plants, with the exception of carefully overwintered runner beans.
How and when should I sow beans?
Sowing beans made easy: From mid-May, after the Ice Saints, sow beans directly into the bed. Maintain a row spacing of around 80 cm, sow in clumps or individually and place the seeds approx. 3 cm deep in the soil. Pre-germinating or soaking for 24 hours can speed up germination.
Sowing directly into the bed
You start sowing the beans in mid-May, when the Ice Saints are over. Then the ground temperature should have warmed up to the necessary 10 degrees Celsius.
Since beans only need around 100 days to ripen, you can sow until July. Planted staggered or one after the other, you benefit from a long bean harvest.
Before sowing, loosen the soil in the bean bed again. Using two sticks (€24.00 on Amazon) and a string, mark a row for the seeds. If you grow several rows of beans, the distance between the rows should be approx. 80 cm.
Within the rows, the beans are mainly planted in clumps. This is especially true for runner beans and runner beans. You can sow bush beans along the rows in clumps or individually.
How to sow successfully
along the line or string with the planting iron or your hands a 3 cm every 40 to 50 cm
dig deep hole
- Put 3 to 5 seeds in it and cover them with soil
- Alternatively, lay out bush beans individually at a distance of 6 to 8 cm
- water carefully
Head start through soaking and pre-germination
You can achieve faster seed germination by soaking the hard shell of the beans in water for 24 hours before sowing.
It is also possible to pre-germinate the beans on the windowsill. To do this, the seeds are sown in small pots, placed in a warm place and planted in the bed after the ice saints.
Tip
You can easily mark the bean sowing with small garden stakes: simply write the type of bean on the label and stick it at the beginning of the line.
