The climbing trumpet or trumpet flower (Campsis) impresses with its lush growth and large, brightly colored flowers. The plant requires sun and nutrient-rich soil, otherwise it is quite easy to care for. However, not all types and varieties of climbing trumpets are hardy.

Which climbing trumpets are hardy?

The hardy climbing trumpets include Campsis radicans 'Flava', 'Stromboli', 'Flamenco' as well as Campsis tagliabuana 'Madame Galen' and 'Indian Summer'. They overwinter outdoors without any problems, provided they are protected and woody. Chinese climbing trumpets, on the other hand, are not hardy.

Winter hardiness depends on species and variety

Basically, there are three different types of climbing trumpet, with only the American climbing trumpet (Campsis radicans) and the large climbing trumpet (Campsis tagliabuana), a hybrid, for temperatures between - depending on the variety - minus 15 ° C and minus 20 °C are hardy. The Chinese climbing trumpet (Campsis grandiflora) is much more sensitive and therefore not hardy, and is also not suitable for planting in the garden.

Stromboli Campsis radicans red July to October 400 cm up to – 15 °C
Flamenco Campsis radicans red July to October 600cm up to – 15 °C

Indian summer Campsis tagliabuana orange July to October 300cm up to – 20 °C

Overwintering climbing trumpet

With the exception of young, not yet woody climbing trumpets and the non-hardy Chinese climbing trumpet, you can easily overwinter trumpet flowers outdoors. It is important that the plants have a sheltered location and are protected from very cold temperatures with a layer of leaves and/or brushwood. Young climbing trumpets only develop their cold resistance with age - the more woody they are, the less sensitive they are. Chinese climbing trumpets, on the other hand, should overwinter under cold house conditions in a cool but frost-free environment - a winter in a heated living room is not advisable; temperatures between 10 to 12 °C and a bright place are ideal.

Tip

Don't be surprised if your trumpet flower doesn't seem to sprout in spring: the first leaves come quite late after the winter break, usually not until May.
