The sedum, also known as sedum or stonecrop, not only thrives in the garden and on the balcony, but is also very suitable as a houseplant. In this article you will find numerous tips and advice for successfully keeping sedums indoors.

Can you keep sedums as houseplants?

Sedums are ideal as houseplants if they are placed in a bright, sunny location and are cultivated in succulent soil. Care includes sparing watering, regular fertilization with cactus fertilizer and pruning in spring.

Suitable sedum species for indoor cultivation

The following table gives you a good overview of the Sedum types that are particularly suitable for indoor cultivation.

Sedum type Bloom Growth habit Growth height Leaves
Sedum adolphi white upright 15 to 20 cm yellow-green
Sedum allantoides green-white bushy up to 30 cm blue-gray
Sedum bellum white flat up to 15 cm, up to 30 cm wide green-white
Sedum lineare light yellow upright, later hanging 20 to 50 cm light grey-green
Sedum morganianum pink hanging up to 100 cm light grey-green
Sedum pachyphyllum light yellow upright up to 30 cm gray-green
Sedum prae altum light yellow upright up to 60 cm green
Sedum rubrotinctum red upright up to 20 cm light green to red
Sedum sieboldii pink hanging up to 10 cm blue-green
Sedum treleasei yellow flat 10 to 20 cm yellow-green
Sedum palmeri yellow upright 15 to 25 cm green

Location and substrate

Above all, it is important to have a bright, sunny location where the plant can enjoy full sun mainly in the morning and evening. Shading only makes sense during midday. Succulent soil is suitable as a substrate, after all the sedum is one of the thick-leaved plants.

Caring for stonecrops: watering, fertilizing, cutting

Since the sedum can store water in its leaves, it tolerates dry periods very well. The plant is also very sensitive to high levels of moisture, which is why you should water regularly but only slightly during the growing season. It is enough to slightly moisten the substrate. Also during the growing season, you should supply your potted sedums with a liquid cactus fertilizer (€7.00 on Amazon) about every eight weeks. There is no fertilization during the winter break. In spring you can cut dried or unsightly shoots back to 2/3 of their length and the plant will then sprout again.

Fat hen overwintering in the apartment

During the growth period, the sedum feels comfortable in a sunny and warm location, but in winter it needs a rest period of three months. It is best spent at temperatures between five to ten degrees Celsius, although you should only water it rarely (and little!) and not fertilize it at all.

Tip

Instead of in the apartment, you can also cultivate Sedum on the balcony all year round.
