The alkaline lily is not exactly easy to care for, but it is definitely worth the effort. A well-chosen location, regular watering and fertilizing, not much more is necessary so that you can enjoy the exotic flowers up to 5 cm in size.
How do I plant Alsca lilies correctly?
To plant Alsca lilies successfully, choose a sunny, warm and wind-protected location, avoid the blazing midday sun, use humus-rich, nutrient-rich, permeable and low-lime soil and water regularly.
The ideal location and the best soil
Although the Alsca lily loves a sunny and warm location, it doesn't particularly like the blazing midday sun. It should be protected from this as well as from too much and especially cold wind. After all, it is native to subtropical areas and is only partially hardy. It also places some demands on the floor. It should be humus and nutrient-rich, but also permeable and as low in lime as possible.
Planting the Alstroem Lily
The planting hole should be about twice as deep as the root tubers are wide. Add some well-rotted compost to the hole and water the plants well. Be patient with your perennials. Freshly planted alstroemerias only bloom after a few years. The fleshy roots are quite sensitive. Make sure to provide your alkaline lily with sufficient water and nutrients.
Propagation of the Alstroem Lily
The Alsca lily can be propagated by seeds or root division. If you have decided to divide an older plant, dig it up in spring. Use a sharp spade or an ax to divide the roots into several pieces of approximately the same size and immediately place them back into the soil.
If you want to sow alstroemeria lilies, then use the freshest seeds possible. This applies to seeds from your own plants as well as those purchased from specialist retailers or online. Press the seeds into a flat cultivation container (€46.00 on Amazon) with nutrient-rich substrate and cover it with perforated foil.
Place the container in a bright and warm place and keep the substrate evenly moist. After a few weeks the first seedlings will appear. These sensitive plants should only be pricked out when they are 7 – 8 cm in size.
The most important things in brief:
- sunny warm location
- Avoid the blazing midday sun
- plant sheltered from the wind
- humous nutrient-rich soil
- permeable, lime-poor soil
Tip
Plant your Alsca lily in a sunny and wind-protected place and it will bloom profusely.
