Once native to almost every field edge, the cornflower has become so rare that it is a protected species. Just give the bright blue blooming beauty a place in the flowerbed where, when planted correctly, it proves to be extremely easy to care for and blooms happily.
When and how should cornflowers be planted?
Cornflowers should be planted in mid-May after the Ice Saints in a sunny, protected location in conventional garden soil with some compost and horn shavings. Note a planting distance of 30 to 45 centimeters and a grouping of three to five plants for an attractive picture.
When will we plant?
Cornflowers grown at home or purchased at a garden store are planted around mid-May. Wait until after the Ice Saints, because only then will there be no more risk of night frosts.
The perfect location
Give the cornflower a sunny, protected spot in the flower bed. It also thrives in partially shaded locations.
The right substrate
Cornflowers are quite undemanding. Conventional garden soil, which you enrich with a little compost and horn shavings, is very pleasant for the garden beauty.
Planting spacing
Depending on the variety, maintain a planting distance of 30 to 45 centimeters. The distance at which you can plant is usually noted on the seed bag (€46.00 on Amazon) or on the plant label. A particularly beautiful picture is created if you plant three to five cornflowers together.
Flowering time
The flowering period of the cornflower begins in June and, if the plant is cleaned regularly, extends well into October.
Sowing and growing
Cornflower seeds sprout readily, so sowing and growing the plant indoors is effortless.
- Sprinkle seeds into pots with potting soil and cover with a thin layer of substrate.
- Wet with a sprayer and cover with a cap or a clear plastic bag.
- Place in a warm, bright but not full sun place.
- As soon as the second pair of leaves appears, separate them.
Sowing outdoors
Cornflowers can also be sown very well in the garden. Depending on the location, you can plant the seeds in mid-April or early May.
Decorative Neighbors
The cornflower looks particularly attractive when combined with red poppies, white daisies or white yarrow.
Tip
Dried cornflowers look extremely good in dry arrangements. Be sure to dry the flowers in a dark place. During the drying process, when exposed to the sun, they change color and then appear yellowish white.
