Apparently red, pink and white geraniums are particularly popular, as such plants can be found on many balconies and in many gardens. The color palette of these popular summer flowers - which are botanically correctly referred to as pelargoniums - has expanded significantly in recent years. In addition to the colors mentioned, there are now also violet, salmon-colored (sometimes classified as “orange”) and two-colored varieties for both the hanging and the standing species.
What colors and types of geraniums are there?
Geraniums come in different colors such as red, pink, white, salmon, purple and bi-color variations. Popular types of geraniums include upright, hanging, scented and foliage geraniums. These different colors and types offer a great variety for gardens and balconies.
Red Geraniums
Red geraniums shine in a wide variety of color gradations from bright red like the “Elara” variety to deep dark red like “Tomke”, “Fire Merlot” or “Burgundy”. Red varieties are also common among scented geraniums, noble geraniums (which are also known as “English geraniums”) and leaf geraniums. This coloration is probably the most common in geraniums.
Standing red geraniums
Upright-growing, red geraniums include the varieties “Elara”, “Samantha”, “Stadt Bern”, “Bernd” and “Herma”, with all of the varieties mentioned except “Stadt Bern” having double flower heads.
Hanging red geraniums
Popular semi-trailing varieties with red, double flowers are “Merlot”, “Burgundy”, “Dark Red”, “Ruben”, “Tomke” and “Falko”. If you prefer hanging geraniums with simple flowers, the “Balkon Red” variety is the right choice for you.
Scented geraniums with red flowers
When it comes to scented geraniums, the varieties that bloom are Pelargonium “Apple Mint”, Pelargonium “Apricot Dieter”, Pelargonium “Aurore Unique” (these even have black markings), Pelargonium “Bernhelm” (rose-flowered), Pelargonium “Black Night” (with particularly dark, deep red to almost black flowers), “Black Pearl” (small, dark red flowers) or “Cherry” (cherry red flowers) in various shades of red.
Pink Geraniums
Pink geraniums are also very popular. These shades range from light pink to deep, dark pink. This color is also common in most geranium species.
Upright pink geraniums
Popular varieties in this category are “Anne” (light pink), “Katarina” (strong pink), “Fiona” (dark pink) and “Lady Ramona” (strong pink with a dark eye).
Pink Hanging Geraniums
A very beautiful, semi-trailing pink flowering variety is “Deep Rose”, while “Shocking Pink” is a classic hanging geranium.
Pink scented geraniums
When it comes to scented geraniums, Pelargonium “Atomic Snowflake” is particularly impressive with its small, pink flowers and a delicate citrus scent.
Geraniums in salmon / orange
Very beautiful, salmon-colored geranium varieties are “Rosetta” and “Wiebke”, both of which grow upright and have double flowers. This color is still quite rare in geraniums and is therefore particularly interesting.
Purple Geraniums
Purple geraniums such as the varieties “Quirin” (very dark purple flowers) and “Lavender” (light purple) are also a rather unusual sight - a real eye-catcher!
White Geraniums
White geraniums look particularly good planted solo or as a contrast to brightly colored specimens. Particularly beautiful varieties are “Cassandra” (upright growing) and “Glacier white” (hanging).
Bicolor geraniums
Bicolor geraniums are a real feast for the eyes. These look particularly beautiful in the combination of red and white (“Mermaid”, red with a white border, and “Arctic Red”) as well as in pink with darker markings (“Lady Ramona”, “Katinka”, “Kristiana”, “Vineta”). The scented geraniums include: “Beromünster” two-tone. Here the leaves are pure white with a magenta pattern. Noble geraniums are also often two-colored.
Tip
The so-called decorative leaf geraniums are less impressive with lush flowers in beautiful colors, but with even more interesting foliage.
