The flowers of the gold lacquer look like they have been painted with a gold-colored varnish. As you approach the end of flowering, the fruits and seeds will slowly emerge. You can use these for propagation!
When and how do you sow gold lacquer?
To sow gold lacquer, sow the seeds directly into the bed in early summer or grow them at home in pots with sowing soil. The germination time is approx. 2 weeks at a temperature of 17-20°C.
Harvest the seeds yourself or buy them
You can also buy the seeds for the gold lacquer. But if you already own one or two plants, you can harvest the seeds yourself. Then you should not cut off the flowers so that the seeds can ripen. Before the pods burst, the seeds are harvested.
The sowing date is in early summer
After flowering, which usually lasts from April/May to June, is the perfect time to sow the seeds. If you don't do this, the plant itself may take over this task.
Sowing the seeds correctly
The seeds can be sown directly in the bed or grown at home. Cold frames and greenhouses are also suitable for growing the plants. What is particularly important is that there is no longer any frost.
You should proceed as in the following instructions:
- Fill pots with sowing soil (€6.00 on Amazon)
- Sow seeds deeply at three to four times the seed strength
- Press earth
- Moisten the substrate with a sprayer
- for pre-cultivation at home: place in a warm place between 17 and 20 °C
- Average germination time: 2 weeks
Care after sowing and protect in winter
From the time the cotyledons are visible, you should wait another 3 weeks. The plants are then planted out individually at a distance of 25 to 30 cm or in a sunny and protected location. Afterwards, it is important that the earth never dries out. Once the plants have gained a foothold, they can tolerate drought.
It is also recommended to take care of it by cutting off the main shoot. This means that the poisonous gold lacquer branches better. In winter it must be protected with brushwood or, if grown in pots, overwintered indoors.
Tip
The disadvantage compared to propagation from cuttings is that the plants you receive do not have the same characteristics as the mother plant. But that can also be advantageous
