It's spring. Not only the daffodils and tulips are blooming, but also the gold lacquer with its lacquered and honey-sweet scented flowers. Is it recommended to cut it afterwards? What should you generally pay attention to when cutting this perennial?
When and how should you cut the gold lacquer?
The gold lacquer should be cut during the flowering period (May to June) or old flowers should be removed with your fingers to stimulate flower formation. In autumn (for perennial varieties only) cut the plant back to the ground, but leave a few leaves.
Several reasons for a cut
For various reasons, it makes sense to provide the gold lacquer with one or more cuts:
- Stimulate the formation of new flowers and extend the flowering period
- Save energy
- Prevent self-seeding
- Gain cuttings
- preparing for wintering
- promote branched growth
Tip the main shoot
The first cut is made in the young stage. When the gold lacquer has reached a size of 10 to 15 cm, its main shoot is cut off. The meaning of this is that it branches out and the growth of the plant becomes bushier and denser.
A simple pair of secateurs is enough
To remove the old flowers, conventional secateurs are sufficient (€14.00 on Amazon). It is important that it is clean and sharp. Otherwise there is a risk that the gold lacquer will be affected by diseases. If poorly cared for, it is susceptible to fungal diseases such as gray mold. But overall the gold lacquer is easy to cut.
When and how should you cut the gold lacquer?
You should cut the gold lacquer or at least clean it out with your fingertips during the flowering period. The old flowers are removed. The flowering period usually lasts from May to June.
Harvest seeds for sowing - do not cut
Only if you want the plant to produce its poisonous seeds that you can later use for sowing, you should not remove the wilted flowers. The seeds ripen around July. Then you can remove them from the pods.
Prune perennial varieties in autumn
The gold lacquer is cut for the second time when autumn has arrived. However, this only applies to perennial varieties. They are cut down to the ground in autumn. However, a few leaves should be left at the bottom. A layer of brushwood is then added as part of winter protection.
Tip
In principle, cutting back the gold lacquer is not absolutely necessary. However, pruning keeps the plant he althier and stronger.
