The white-yellow face of the radiant basket flowers is known to almost every perennial lover. Daisies not only impress with their long flowering period, but they are also robust and easy to care for.
How do you properly care for daisies?
Daisies require regular watering to keep the root ball moist, fertilization about every 3 to 4 weeks and pruning in autumn as well as during the flowering period. If grown in pots, you should repot it annually in fresh soil and overwinter frost-free.
How often do you water daisies?
When there is a lack of water, daisies quickly hang their heads and mourn. You should therefore keep them from drying out! The soil is kept moderately moist. When grown in pots, it is necessary to water the daisy almost every day in summer (sometimes twice a day). The root ball should never dry out!
What is important when fertilizing?
Consider the following aspects if you want to fertilize your daisies:
- In the open field, a compost application in spring is sufficient
- fertilize regularly when growing in pots
- Provide fertilizer from March to the end of August at the latest
- conventional flower fertilizer meets the requirements
- fertilize every 3 to 4 weeks
- Fertilizer sticks are also suitable
How do you overwinter daisies in a pot?
Not all daisy species need to be overwintered. But if you grow in a pot, you can't do without overwintering. From October onwards, the potted daisies should be brought into their winter quarters. For example, the following are suitable for wintering:
- Winter Gardens
- Greenhouses
- Stairwells
- Bedroom
It is important when overwintering that it is frost-free and bright. The temperatures should ideally be between 5 and 7 °C. During the winter, the daisies are watered sparingly and not fertilized.
Which diseases and pests are important?
In case of care errors and a poor location, an infestation by aphids, whiteflies and spider mites can occur. Diseases can include root rot and other fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. Parts affected by mildew should be radically cut off. In addition, hardening with a slurry made from field horsetail is recommended.
When does a visit with scissors make sense?
In autumn, daisies are cut back about a hand's width above the ground. But pruning is not only useful in autumn. These perennials should also be used with scissors in summer. The old flowers are removed so that new flowers continue to grow.
Tip
If you keep your daisies in pots, it is advisable to repot them in fresh soil every year. This also saves you having to add fertilizer.
