The strawflower (Helichrysum bracteatum) originally comes from Australia and is now cultivated in a variety of subspecies in European gardens. In a suitable location, this plant requires very little care throughout the gardening season.
Which location is optimal for a strawflower?
The ideal location for a strawflower is a sunny, hot and dry place, for example on south-facing slopes, on terraces in pots or in balcony boxes. A poor, well-drained soil mixed with a little sand ensures optimal conditions for the growth of the plant.
The needs of the strawflower
Strawflowers are naturally used to getting along with very little water. This plant therefore thrives on comparatively dry soils. The strawflower can also cover relatively barren soils with an abundance of flowers. However, the plants should receive enough sunlight and warmth so that they can develop he althily. Since most types of strawflower are generally relatively sensitive to frost, they should only be planted outdoors after the ice saints have passed.
Choose the right location for the strawflower
You can also use the strawflower to plant places in the garden where it is very hot, sunny and dry. For example, straw flowers are suitable for:
- dry, south-facing slopes
- Pots on the terrace
- Balcony boxes
The planting substrate should be mixed with a little sand if necessary so that the roots of the strawflower do not become waterlogged. Since strawflowers in balcony boxes are more exposed to the sun and dry wind, you should water strawflowers on the balcony a little more regularly than in the garden bed.
Tip
Since the colors of the straw flowers are still very attractive even when dried, they are popular elements in dry bouquets. To do this, the strawflower flowers are cut off before they bloom and hung upside down in a dark place to dry.
