The fast-growing, medium-sized common trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) originally comes from the warm and sunny regions of southeastern North America and has been increasingly planted here in recent years. The tree, which grows up to ten meters wide, is cultivated primarily for its impressive, heart-shaped leaves and its summer flowers.
When is the trumpet tree blooming time?
The common trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) shows its impressive white flowers between June and July. During this time, the bell-shaped flowers in upright panicles exude a light scent that attracts numerous insects such as bees.
Trumpet tree shows flowers between June and July
The white, bell-shaped flowers of the trumpet tree are arranged in upright panicles and show their full beauty in the months of June and July. The hermaphrodite flowers exude a light scent that attracts numerous insects - especially bees - which is why the deciduous tree is also known as a bee pasture. This develops into bean-like, slightly poisonous fruits that are up to 35 centimeters long.
Not every trumpet tree blooms
However, not every variety of trumpet tree tends to bloom. For example, the globe trumpet tree (particularly the “Nana” variety) only blooms very rarely.in older age. The blood trumpet tree (Catalpa erubescens Purpurea) and the gold trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides Aurea) also show their flowers in the fifth or sixth year at the earliest.
Tip
Young trees in particular should preferably be supplied with organic fertilizer (compost or horn shavings) to promote growth and thus budding.
