Damp and cold weather sabotages the loving cultivation of tomatoes within a short period of time. The dreaded late blight strikes relentlessly. The tomato plants thrive safely and protected in the self-built greenhouse. Even an inexperienced hand can do it.
How do you build a tomato greenhouse yourself?
For a self-built tomato greenhouse you need squared timber, roof battens, wooden slats, greenhouse film, stapler, square, screws, spade, spirit level, folding rule, wood stain and brush. After impregnating the wood and preparing the holes, a basic framework is created from the wood and the foil is attached.
Material list and preparatory work
So that the construction work takes place without interruption, the tools and materials should be ready.
- three squared timbers, 230x10x10 cm
- three squared timbers, 210x10x10 cm
- two squared timbers, 200x10x10 cm
- six roof battens, 100x10x5 cm
- two wooden slats, 90x2x2 cm
- stable greenhouse film
- a stapler with needles, angles, screws
- Spade, spirit level, folding rule
- Wood stain for impregnation, brush
All wood is impregnated in advance. While the glaze is drying, dig six holes 50 centimeters deep. Four holes form the corner points of a rectangle measuring 200 x 80 centimeters. Create the other two holes in the middle of the long sides.
The basic framework is created
Position the squared timbers vertically in the holes. To achieve a minimally sloped roof surface, one row of wood is higher than the opposite row. This means rainwater can drain away more quickly. The wooden posts are carefully filled.
Now take the 200 centimeter long squared timbers. Place these on the rows of beams and then screw them together. This is followed by the roof battens, which are fixed using an angle.
Attach the foil cladding
With the basic framework finished, the main work is done. Now cut the foil to size to staple it to the wood. Now a helping hand might be welcome. The tighter the greenhouse film is fixed, the better it will withstand wind and weather. Of course you don't want to do without a door. Complete this last step as follows:
- the narrow side of the tomato greenhouse is not covered
- Cut a piece of foil and wrap it around one of the two wooden strips at each end
- screw the top bar to the front roof batten
- the bottom bar stabilizes the film so that it hangs vertically
The homemade tomato greenhouse is ready. At least rainy weather can no longer hinder the successful cultivation of tomato plants.
Tips & Tricks
You can give your self-built tomato greenhouse additional stability if you hammer the corner posts into ground sleeves. Even the inexpensive standard version with a short ground anchor protects the tomato house from wind.
