Days of rainy weather in summer temperatures cause the lawn to rise rapidly. Mowing wet lawns has long been frowned upon by home gardeners. In fact, you can cut wet grass very well if you follow the tips below.
How do I mow wet lawns correctly?
Mowing wet lawns is possible by attaching the collecting basket to the lawn mower, not walking on the lawn, setting the mower to the maximum cutting height and regularly removing the clippings. No more than a third of the leaf mass should be cut to protect the lawn.
Mowing the lawn in rainy weather – important requirements at a glance
So that wet lawns give an even appearance after cutting, these important requirements must be taken into account in advance:
- Hang the collection basket on the lawn mower - even with a mulching mower
- Do not walk on the lawn before mowing
- Set the mower to the maximum cutting height
Before you start mowing, you should get plenty of strength. Cutting wet lawn requires significantly more effort than cutting dry grass.
How to mow wet lawns properly
Once you have started the engine, please walk directly behind the lawnmower. If you tread down wet blades of grass before cutting, they will not straighten up for a long time and cannot be caught by the blades. If damp grass collects in the collecting basket, the weight increases quickly, so that the wheels sink noticeably deeper. Therefore, pause more often to empty the basket.
Wet cuttings often get caught in the knife bar. Do not wait until the engine stalls as a result. Stop the lawn mower, remove the spark plug connector and remove the wet grass from the blades. Always tilt the mower so that the spark plug and air filter are facing upwards.
The setting to maximum cutting height makes mowing in rainy weather noticeably easier. If the lawn ultimately appears to be too high, lower the wheels one step. Never cut the noble grasses shorter than 4 to 5 cm. Even in rainy weather, follow the golden one-third rule: cut off a maximum of a third of the leaf mass from lawn grass.
Tip
Wet lawn is particularly stressful for all components in the lawnmower (€89.00 at Amazon). Therefore, clean the mower thoroughly after each use. Also include the air filter, which can be cleaned in just a few steps. Take this opportunity to take a look at the condition of the spark plug. You can remove black-brown deposits on the contacts with a brush.
