Dahlia lovers usually can hardly wait until the first flowers of the non-hardy plants appear. By moving forward, the waiting time can be significantly shortened. This is how you prefer Georgians correctly.
How can you grow dahlias correctly?
To grow dahlias, plant the tubers in pots or containers with nutrient-rich garden soil from March onwards. Place them in a warm, bright place, e.g. B. on the windowsill or in the cold frame. The plants can only be put outdoors after the Ice Saints in mid to late May.
Make dahlias bloom earlier by bringing them forward
Dahlias are not hardy. As soon as the tender shoots get frost, they die. You can therefore only plant dahlias outdoors when frost is no longer expected. You should not put the tubers in the ground before the end of April.
However, it takes a few weeks until the young shoots have crossed the ground and reach the surface.
By moving forward, you save yourself the wait for the first flowers because the tubers can develop their first shoots in pots, tubs or cold frames protected from frost.
Prefer to protect against snails
Not only garden fans love dahlias, snails also like to eat the colorful summer flowers. By pulling forward, you protect the delicate dahlia shoots from falling victim to pests.
Older shoots of dahlias have a bitter taste that snails dislike. Pre-grown plants leave the snails alone.
Suitable places for breeding georgines
The place to grow dahlias must be warm, airy and bright. Good places are:
- Window sill, preferably facing east or west
- Winter Garden
- Cold frame
When growing in the cold frame, make sure that the soil is no longer too cold and nice and loose. During the day you can open the cover of the bed, but at night you have to put it back on again.
How to prefer dahlias
For growing on the windowsill or in the winter garden, you need pots or buckets that are sufficiently deep. The larger the dahlia tubers are, the deeper the planter needs to be.
Place a pottery shard on the drain hole and fill the pots with nutritious garden soil.
The tubers are placed so deep in the containers that they are covered on top by a layer of soil approximately three centimeters thick. Water the soil only lightly.
Care when moving forward
The dahlia tubers don't need much care. You only need to water regularly when the shoots are visible.
But make sure that no waterlogging forms. It causes the tubers to rot.
Only release into the open after the Ice Saints
You can only put the early Georgians in a sunny spot in the garden after the Ice Saints in mid to late May. Before that, the danger is too great that there will be another ground frost at night, which will freeze the tender shoots.
Plant the early tubers together with the potting soil in the prepared planting hole.
Tips & Tricks
If you later want to care for the early dahlias on the terrace or balcony, you should put them in suitable pots straight away. Then you save yourself the hassle of transplanting.
