Zinnias enchant flower beds and balcony boxes with their compact basket flowers, the color of which ranges from white to pink, yellow, orange, red and violet to two-tone patterned specimens. Unfortunately, the sun-hungry flowering plants are very sensitive to frost and the first ground frosts cause the plants to die. Many gardening enthusiasts therefore ask themselves whether particularly beautiful zinnias could also be overwintered.
Can zinnias be overwintered?
Zinnias can be overwintered indoors in winter by digging them up before the first night frosts and planting them in standard potting soil in a frost-free, cool and bright room. Water sparingly during the dormant phase, but do not allow the root ball to dry out.
The wintering
In its homeland, which is in the warm regions of South America, the zinnia thrives as a perennial, herbaceous plant. You can take advantage of this property and continue to care for the zinnia indoors during the winter.
Dig up the perennials before the first night frosts and place them in a pot filled with standard potting soil (€10.00 on Amazon). The place for overwintering must be frost-free, but cool and bright. Water the zinnia very sparingly during the dormant phase. However, the root ball must not dry out completely.
Tip
Zinnias are avoided by nematodes. They are therefore suitable as biological pest protection in the vegetable patch.
