In autumn they shine bright red again and from numerous bushes: the rock-hard fruits of the dog roses. Unlike other wild fruits, however, hardly anyone bothers to collect rose hips. The effort can be worth it, because the fruits of the dog rose (Rosa canina) contain a lot of vitamin C and are therefore a very he althy source of vitamins for the cold season.
Are dog roses poisonous?
Hound roses (Rosa corymbifera) are not poisonous, but their orange-red apple fruits do not have the he althy properties of dog roses (Rosa canina). Dog rose hips contain a lot of vitamin C and are therefore more recommended as food.
Do not confuse dog rose and dog rose with each other
However, when collecting, you should be careful to make sure you collect the right fruits. Only the fruits of the dog rose, known as rose hips, are edible, while the more orange-red apple fruits of the closely related and very similar dog rose (Rosa corymbifera) are not used for jam etc. Although the fruits of the Rosa corymbifera are not poisonous, they do not have the he althy properties of the actual rose hips.
Tip
Due to the great similarity between the two species, confusion can quickly arise. However, you can distinguish Rosa corymbifera and Rosa canina by the number of thorns they have: While the dog rose has many thorns, Rosa corymbifera only has a few and is therefore almost thornless.
