If you give your Ritterstern the right care program, it will be happy to put on its flower dress again in the summer. The following lines will give you a practical idea of the conditions on which this little floral miracle is based.
How to make an amaryllis bloom in summer?
To keep a knight's star (amaryllis) blooming in summer, cut off faded flowers after winter blooming, keep the substrate moist and fertilize regularly. Place the plant outside in a sunny location in May and reduce watering and fertilizing from July onwards.
Top priority: Proper care after winter bloom
If the winter flowering period is coming to an end in February, you can set the course for summer flowering with the right care program and a good dose of patience. How to do it right:
- Clean out the withered flowers in time to prevent seed formation
- Cut off the strong flower stalk 4-5 cm above the bulb if it has yellowed
- Keep the substrate constantly slightly moist and water from below
- Fertilize liquidly every 14 days from March
Please do not cut off the green leaves at this time. These provide jumpstart for the summer sprouting of new leaves and the longed-for inflorescence on your Ritterstern.
Out into the fresh air in mid-May
When the Ice Saints say goodbye in May, carry your knight's star onto the balcony. So that the subtropical plant does not get sunburned, it initially stays in a partially shaded location for 8 to 10 days to harden off. The amaryllis then takes its place in the sun. There is nothing wrong with sinking the pot into the bed for this purpose in order to get envious looks over the garden fence.
If you continue with the recommended care undeterred, the knight's star will shine again in the middle of summer with a new splendor of flowers. If the winter leaves die off now, this is no cause for alarm. Cut off the dead leaves to make room for fresh greenery. Water and fertilize regularly until July. As a result, the application of fertilizer is stopped and the amount of watering is reduced in preparation for the autumn growth break.
Tip
Due to its strong flower stalks, the amaryllis has made a name for itself as a cut flower for the vase. Thanks to a long flowering period of more than 2 weeks, the proud floral grace can be found in magnificent winter bouquets to communicate admiration and friendly affection in the language of flowers.
