How can I care for my amaryllis in summer?
To overwinter an amaryllis successfully, you should move it to a sunny, warm place outdoors after flowering, slowly accustom it to the sun, water regularly and fertilize every 14 days.
The outdoor season begins in May
You have done a good job as a hobby gardener if you have freed the knight's star of its withered flowers and yellowed main stem at the end of the flowering period. Continue supplying water and nutrients in your usual window seat so that your amaryllis proudly presents itself with a dense tuft of foliage in spring. After the Ice Saints leave, the following summer care program begins:
- Relocate the knight's star to a sunny, warm location on the balcony or in the garden
- First get the Hippeastrum used to the sun in a partially shaded place for 8 to 10 days
- You can optionally place the plant and its pot in the ground
- Water regularly and fertilize liquidly every 14 days
If you plant your amaryllis in the bed, it is an advantage if the bulb stays in the pot to protect it from voracious voles. This makes putting things away in the fall easier.
Summer blooms not excluded
While you keep your Ritterstern he althy and happy over the summer with a loving hand, the South American plant sometimes proves its temperament with a flower in the middle of summer. Accept the floral gift gratefully and continue the recommended care program seamlessly, supplemented by these cutting measures:
- Consistently cut off wilted flowers from the main stem in summer
- Don't cut the stem until it no longer has flowers
- Cut out individual dead leaves from the foliage
Please leave all green leaves on the Ritterstern until they have moved in during the autumn rest phase.
Tip
You will only be able to successfully keep a knight's star in a glass over the summer if you pot the onion at the end of the flowering period.
