Are perennial sunflowers hardy?
Perennial sunflowers are hardy and can easily survive frosty temperatures for several years. The leaves die, but the perennial retreats into the ground and sprouts again in spring. However, potted plants should receive winter protection.
Perennial sunflowers in winter
All varieties of perennial sunflowers are absolutely hardy and therefore thrive perennial without any problems. However, the leaves die and the plant retreats completely into the ground. But don't worry, the perennial will sprout again in spring. To be on the safe side, only potted plants should be given winter protection and overwintered in a place that is as sheltered as possible.
These varieties bloom in midsummer
If you're looking for a perennial sunflower to enchant your summer garden, the following varieties are available every year with lavish blooms from August to October:
- Soleil d’Or impresses with lush, double, bright yellow flowers and an ornamental silhouette; Growth height 130 cm
- Lemmon Queen presents itself as a friendly fence-peeper with its lemon-yellow flowers; Growth height 170-180 cm
- Triomphe de Gand impresses with 12 cm large flower discs and robust winter hardiness; Growth height 100-150 cm
These hybrids are wonderful for wind and privacy protection. With their flowery stature, perennial sunflowers conceal bare facades, cover garbage cans and make compost heaps disappear from view.
These yellow flower suns shine in autumn
The following premium varieties accompany us through autumn with their yellow flower discs. If the annual Helianthus have already retired, the following hybrids will only emerge to their full beauty:

So that the powerful sunflowers can maintain their posture, they should be able to lean on a support (€18.00 on Amazon). In the open field it makes sense to place a plant stick next to the flowers.
Tip
Perennial sunflowers don't just have magnificent ornamental varieties to offer. Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) is also a very he althy vegetable plant that thrives in your garden. The frost-resistant tubers are very popular as a tasty winter vegetable with a nutty-sweet aroma. With so much to please the palate, the yellow autumn blossoms almost become a minor matter.
