If the gazebo is getting old and renovating it is no longer worthwhile, the only option is often to dismantle the old house. This creates a lot of waste that has to be separated and disposed of professionally. Careful separation is mandatory, otherwise the recycling centers will no longer accept the building rubble.
How can I dispose of a garden shed properly?
Disposing of a garden shed requires careful separation of wood, metal parts and roofing materials. Wood is sorted into grades, metal can be sold, and roofing materials, especially asbestos, must be disposed of properly. Construction containers or demolition companies are alternative disposal options.
The wood
Since the boards of the garden house were almost always painted with wood preservatives, burning them is not a good idea. Since many pollutants would escape into the air, it is forbidden.
First unnail all wooden parts and then sort them into:
- Class A1: Natural, only mechanically treated wood
- Class A2: Lacquered, painted material
- Class A3: Coated wood
- Class A4: Wood treated with special wood preservatives
Depending on the region, you can take the sorted boards to the recycling center or to a special landfill. The municipalities provide information about this.
Metal parts
You will be amazed at how much metal is produced during dismantling. Be sure to collect this material separately. In some regions the scrap dealers take the valuable raw material from you and you even get a few euros for it.
The roofing materials
In older garden houses, these can sometimes still contain asbestos.
- In this case, be sure to protect yourself from direct contact, asbestos is carcinogenic!
- If you have no experience with this material, consult a specialist.
- Asbestos must be disposed of separately, please seek advice if necessary.
Disposing of roofing felt is not always easy either. Smaller quantities may be disposed of in household waste. If you have larger lengths, you should roll them up tightly and tie them up. The recycling center often accepts the waste. If this is not the case, you will have to take the roofing felt to a special landfill. There is a charge for disposal here, but it is not too expensive.
Tip
If the effort involved in separating waste and transporting the building materials away yourself is too high for you, you can rent a construction container. If necessary, you can even have a company carry out the entire demolition, which is particularly advisable for old garden houses with asbestos components.
