Lucky bamboo is quite easy to propagate. You can cut the trunk and place the sections in water to root or cut offshoots or cuttings. Place these in the water until roots have formed.
How can lucky bamboo be successfully propagated?
Lucky bamboo can be propagated by dividing stems or cuttings. Cut the trunk into 10 cm long sections or take side shoots as cuttings. Place them in low-lime water until roots form.
The lucky bamboo is not so easy to grow from seeds. Hobby gardeners should avoid this, especially since the lucky bamboo doesn't bloom that often. Propagation is much easier by dividing stems or cuttings. If you have a very strong, tall lucky bamboo, then cut the trunk into several pieces at least 10 cm long and place them in a container filled with water.
Cut cuttings
The lucky bamboo often forms side shoots, which you can use very well as cuttings. A pleasant side effect is that the lucky bamboo sprouts again in these places and then often forms several side shoots. This way the plant becomes bushier and you always get new offshoots. Use a clean knife to cut off the side shoots as close to the trunk as possible without damaging it.
Rooting cuttings
Place the cuttings in a glass or vase with water. However, this should not be fresh but a little stale and should stand a few centimeters high in the container. Place the container in a bright and warm place with high humidity. The temperature there should be around 20 – 22 °C. Water the cuttings as soon as the water level drops.
Soil or water – where do young plants grow better?
The easy-care lucky bamboo can be cultivated in both water and soil. If it is in a vase or hydroponics, then it should be fertilized regularly. This is not necessary when planting in soil, at least initially. However, the young plants should have already developed proper roots beforehand, otherwise they will not grow well.
The most important things in brief:
- growing from seeds is hardly possible for hobby gardeners
- Easiest way of propagation: cut side shoots as cuttings
- turn 1 into X: divide the trunk into several pieces
- place in lime-free/low-lime water
Tip
If your lucky bamboo produces side shoots, then use them as offshoots.
