As a barberry plant, sacred bamboo is not a “real” bamboo but a shrub. So it doesn't have any stalks, but rather one trunk or many, because it grows with multiple stems. It's also evergreen, so it doesn't lose its leaves in winter.
What to do if the sacred bamboo loses leaves?
If a Sacred Bamboo loses leaves, it may indicate lack of care or disease. Check the location, light and water needs, and soil conditions and adjust care if necessary to correct the problem.
Instead, it remains in its full beauty. The foliage turns yellow, orange or red in autumn, depending on the variety. The flowers also produce bright red berries that remain on the bush for a long time. This makes the sacred bamboo an extraordinary eye-catcher in the garden. However, the berries are poisonous, like the whole bush.
In spring the sky bamboo returns to its usual green color without the leaves falling off first. The leaves simply turn green again. Unfortunately, the sky bamboo is only partially hardy. However, there are now also winter-hardy varieties. If you live in a rather rough area, then you might choose one of these for your garden.
What can I do if my sky bamboo loses leaves?
If your Sacred Bamboo is losing its leaves, then something is wrong. First, check the location and care. Is your sky bamboo getting enough light and water? The soil may have dried out too much, then you should water it well. Did you use low-lime water?
If your tap water has a lot of lime, then it is better to switch to watering with rainwater. Maybe you watered the shrub too much and it now has wet feet. In this case, you should water less in the future and perhaps loosen the soil or create a drainage layer so that excess water can drain away better in the future.
